Introduction to Strategic Branding through Project Business Management

Executives and Managers are familiar with the terms "Business Management" and "Project Management" but when they are asked to define "Project Business Management" expressions become diverse and often fuzzy.

Project Management itself has undergone a rapid evolution due to software development and ubiquitious digital products and communication methods but then again "Project Business Management" is again one more layer of sophisticated development on top of that.

Project Management Institute, perhaps the best known body for in the world for pioneering project management practices defines project as "A temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service or result" and project management as "The Application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to planned project activities to meet the project requirements to produce desired results that will meet the project's business objective".

Project Business Management relying on definitions above, is the enterprise-wide practice of project management methods including such tools and concepts as Portfolios, Programs and Project Processes as its important subsets.

As an enterprise-wide management practice, Project Business Management divides to six distinct areas to be mastered:

  • Project, Program and Portfolio Management: structuring the organizations strategic and operative administration in such a manner that all activities are aligned to be efficiently and effectively executed.
  • Governance: Setting up an Enterprise Project Management Office (EPMO) for carrying out the administrative work of project deliverance.
  • Standardization: Integration of Project, Business and Operations Management based on end vision.
  • Capability: Integration of project management practices with business strategies and objectives.
  • Execution: EPMO in PBM planning operations.
  • Maturity: Issuing a EPMO charter and setting project management policy.

Reader familiar with P3M3 or PRINCE2 methods may see resemblances in the above stuctures but the two methods mentioned do not go as deeply to enterprise structures as Project Business Management although they are good and valid tools in measuring the project level output of organization.

The Branding process is a tool guiding the managers, answering an important question: "What does the company (or product, or service) stand for?" Branding is the values-based relationship between a trademark and its audience.

The Brand is not the business strategy of a company, which is much more detailed and operational and where the EWPM practices create a frame guiding the business operations to become aligned effectively. Brand on the other hand gives a meaning for the corporate existense.
